LEGO POETRY

The bringing together of literacy, creativity and kinaesthetic learning, brick by brick.

LEGO Poetry was the brainchild of Project Synthesis in 2011 to support literacy in schools. In workshops with grade 3 students, they were encouraged to place their spelling words on LEGO bricks and make poems – engaging them in learning through play. As students’ engagement in this style of workshop grew, so did the worded bricks, expanding the collection of LEGO brick vocabulary that was used and showcased at events, conferences, in school programs and galleries. The collection of over 1,000 LEGO brick words has since appeared at writer’s festivals, the National Gallery and in libraries and schools across Australia.

The LEGO Poetry model of adding words to bricks and spending time with language in this fun and playful way continues to be used across a range of programs and projects in schools, libraries, community organisations and corporations.

Collaborators on this project include the Melbourne Writers Festival and National Gallery of Australia.
