PLAYFUL WALKS TO SCHOOL

Playful walks to school is an initiative designed to promote agency and inspire imagination in children across Victoria through one of the most standard practices happening daily in neighbourhoods across the state.

Using participatory methods, Project Synthesis developed and employed a co-design process in working with students from Birralee Primary School in Victoria to support them in the design of playful approaches that could be applied to their commute to school. The process involved students undertaking several half day design sessions to develop a brief of what these playful approaches might look like. These were then briefed into an agency who provided the designs according to the students brief, students provided feedback on the designs and final works were then agreed upon.

Following the students work, a partnership with Manningham City Council was established which saw the students designs embedded in the routes to school that the community had identified, and stickers placed along these paths to encourage playful and exploratory trips to school.

This project was developed in partnership with Birralee Primary School (Victoria) and in collaboration with Vs Creative.
