BY GAMERS, FOR GAMERS

The lived experience of young people is often undervalued. But if we are to understand the spaces they exist in and the things they engage with, it’s critical that we shift our thinking and see young people as valuable co-designers and co-creators.

Whilst engaged by national children’s charity, the Alannah & Madeline Foundation, Project Synthesis producer, Daniel Donahoo, led the development of the ‘By Gamers, For Gamers’ – a co-created suite of resources for parents and primary school-aged gamers. Facilitated through a participatory approach, lived experience participants were encouraged to share their perspectives, experiences and ambitions around gaming. This was then co-produced into a written guide for children aged 5 – 8 years of age as an introduction to gaming, as well as a video created by a young gamer directed at parents of young gamers.

The ‘By Gamers, For Gamers’ handbook has been a featured resource for individuals, communities and organisations, including the leading and internationally reputable Joan Ganz Cooney Centre

This project was developed in partnership with the Alannah & Madeline Foundation with support from RIOT Games.
